Sans Soucie is an award-winning upcycling studio and clothing label founded in Vancouver in 2002, dedicated to transforming pre-consumer waste hosiery into new textiles, garments, accessories, and soft furnishings. From 2002-2019, the studio developed a signature industrial upcycling method that combined artisanal dyeing and circular textile surface design methods using obsolete sewing machinery and digital tools, producing limited-edition collections that were zero waste by design.
Working closely with Canadian manufacturers to redirect hosiery waste from landfill, Sans Soucie became a reference point early on in the circular fashion movement, showcasing work at international fashion weeks (NY, London, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal) and selling through boutiques in Canada, USA, Japan, Australia and the UK. Collections have also been included in numerous international exhibitions and commissioned for private clientele including film/TV, dance, and performance. The studio’s practice laid the groundwork for additional research into textile waste systems, demonstrating how creative remanufacturing and locally rooted production can generate new material pathways, business models, and stories around value, repair, and reuse.
